The Sweet Spot — Mid-Range Build (~$1,475)
Our pick for most people. Smooth, high-refresh 1440p gaming, effortless multitasking, and a modern platform you can upgrade for years. If your budget stretches past $1,400, this is the build.
A quick word on prices (October 2026)
There's a worldwide shortage of memory chips right now — AI data centers are buying them all — and 32GB of RAM that cost roughly $80 in 2025 now costs about $450. That one part pushes this build a little over our original $1,450 target. We're showing you honest prices, and the trims below can pull it back under if you're patient.
The Parts List
Buy exactly this list and you're done thinking about compatibility. Prices were current as of October 2026.
| Part | Model | Why this one | Price | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Processor (CPU) | AMD Ryzen 5 9600X | The brain of the PC — and the best gaming chip under $200, full stop. Six fast cores, sips power, and it uses AMD's AM5 socket, which means in a few years you can drop in a faster processor without replacing the motherboard. That's a real upgrade path. | $179 | View on Amazon |
| Motherboard | GIGABYTE B650M GAMING PLUS WIFI | The circuit board everything plugs into. Wi-Fi is built right in (no separate adapter to buy), and it supports EXPO — AMD's one-click setting that runs your RAM at its full advertised speed. It also has Q-Flash Plus, which lets you update the board's firmware without a processor installed, just in case. | $139 | View on Amazon |
| Memory (RAM) | G.Skill Flare X5 32GB (2×16GB) DDR5-6000 | 32GB is the comfortable amount for gaming plus everything else — streaming, Discord, forty browser tabs. DDR5-6000 is the sweet spot speed for Ryzen processors. It's low-profile so it fits under big coolers. And yes, the price stings right now. That's the shortage, not us. | ~$450 | View on Amazon |
| Storage (SSD) | WD Black SN770 1TB | The fast kind of storage — Windows boots in seconds, games load quickly. 1TB holds Windows plus roughly 8–12 modern games. It's fast, reliable, has a 5-year warranty, and it's near its all-time-low price right now. A rare win in today's storage market. | $55 | View on Amazon |
| Graphics card (GPU) | ASUS Dual Radeon RX 9060 XT 16GB | The part that draws your games — and the cheapest 16GB card of the current generation. 16GB of video memory (the graphics card's own memory) means it'll handle future games at 1440p without breaking a sweat. It's efficient too: just one 8-pin power plug. | $459.99 | View on Amazon |
| Power supply (PSU) | MSI MAG A650GL 650W, 80+ Gold | 650 watts from a quality unit with a 10-year warranty — this system only uses about 250W while gaming, so there's tons of headroom. "Fully modular" means you only plug in the cables you need, so there's no spaghetti. It even includes the newer 12VHPWR cable for future graphics cards. | $90.77 | View on Amazon |
| Case | Montech AIR 100 ARGB | The box it all lives in. Four fans with pretty ARGB lighting included (you can turn it off), mesh front for airflow, and great value. The graphics card fits with room to spare. | ~$70 | View on Amazon |
| CPU cooler | Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 SE | Keeps the processor cool. This is the internet's favorite budget cooler — it cools like units three times its price. At $32 it's almost silly. It fits this case, and the low-profile RAM clears its fan. | $32.31 | View on Amazon |
| Total | ~$1,476 | |||
Will it all fit together? Yes.
We did the homework so you don't have to: the processor fits the motherboard. The RAM is the right type and the right speed. The 650W power supply is way more than the ~250W this system draws while gaming. The graphics card fits in the case with room to spare. The cooler fits under the case's height limit, and the RAM is short enough to clear the cooler's fan. Buy the list, snap it together — there's nothing to figure out.
Bring the price down
- Watch the RAM. Memory is the most inflated part of this build. Catching a 32GB kit on sale is the single fastest way under $1,450.
- Drop to an A620M motherboard (around $95–100). You lose some overclocking features, but games run exactly the same.
- Step the case down to the Montech AIR 100 LITE (~$60). Same good airflow, fewer glowing fans.
- Consider the Intel Arc B580 12GB (~$250) instead of the RX 9060 XT. It's about 25% slower with less video memory, but it pulls the total down to roughly $1,265.
What this build is (and isn't) for
This is the 1440p sweet spot: high settings, high refresh rates, plus streaming, content creation, and heavy multitasking — all comfortable. It's overkill if you only play at 1080p (the Budget build has you covered there). And if you want no-compromise 4K, step up to the High-End build.
